ENTER2012 main conclusions

ENTER 2012, the annual IT and Tourism conference, was held from 24th to 27th January 2012 in Helsingborg, Sweden.

Organised by IFITT, the leading international organisation for information technologies in travel and tourism, this conference is the biggest tourism IT and travel related event of the year, attracting 300 delegates from more than 40 countries, covering all continents. This edition had 150 presenters, which attended the conference to discuss the present and the future of eTourism. Overall, the event included 6 keynotes, 51 research papers, 59 industry presentations, 16 PhD-student presentations and 14 presentations on the Scandinavian day.

IFITT President Professor Dimitrios Buhalis stated that "ENTER has again identified the most important developments in tourism and technology. It is evident from the presentations that social media is becoming the most critical communication tool for organizations to engage dynamically with consumers. Applications which are location and context aware and facilitate a range of sensors also emerge to provide dynamic solution for the travellers. Perhaps the future will emerge through innovations in augmented reality and gamification where the virtual will blend with the real world. This will enable tourism and travel organizations to co-create memorable experiences with - rather than for - tourists, throughout their journey from inspiration to travel experience and post-trip sharing in the social world."

Rodolfo Baggio, ENTER2012 Chair said: "A wonderful team has been able to provide a well-balanced and high-quality program. Good and insightful presentations from academia, industry and destinations have given the audience examples and ideas. The social program, and the Swedish hospitality has then helped strengthening the most important aspect of the whole IFITT community: the willingness to work together for the advancement of the field."

During ENTER2012 KLM was awarded with the prestigious IFITT innovation award for their innovations on social media marketing and state -of-the art approach in customer service via social media in airline industry. Additional IFITT Awards were presented: the Hannes Werthner Tourism and Technology Lifetime Achievement Award to Inkeri Starry from Regional Council of Lapland (Finland), Dr. Carlos Lamsfus from Cic-Tourgune (Spain) won the Thesis Excellence Award, while Malgorzata Ogonowska (Poland) won the best PHD proposal Award. ENTER2012 Best Paper Award was presented to Ada Lo, Joey Wu and Rob Law (Hong Kong Polytechnic University); Andrew Lepp, Heather Gibson, Charles Lane won the Journal Paper of the Year Award for a study entitled: Image and perceived risk - A study of Uganda and its official tourism website published in Tourism Management. Finally, John Fotis won the picture competition with a prize offered by the Thailand Tourism Board.

International tourism to reach one billion in 2012

International tourist arrivals grew by over 4% in 2011 to 980 million, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. With growth expected to continue in 2012, at a somewhat slower rate, international tourist arrivals are on track to reach the milestone one billion mark later this year.

International tourist arrivals grew by 4.4% in 2011 to a total 980 million, up from 939 million in 2010, in a year characterised by a stalled global economic recovery, major political changes in the Middle East and North Africa and natural disasters in

Japan

. By region, Europe (+6%) was the best performer, while by subregion South-America (+10%) topped the ranking. Contrary to previous years, growth was higher in advanced economies (+5.0%) than in emerging ones (+3.8%), due largely to the strong results in Europe, and the setbacks in the Middle East and North Africa.

“International tourism hit new records in 2011 despite the challenging conditions,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. “For a sector directly responsible for 5% of the world’s GDP, 6% of total exports and employing one out of every 12 people in advanced and emerging economies alike these results are encouraging, coming as they do at a time in which we urgently need levers to stimulate growth and job creation,” he added.

Europe surpasses the half billion mark in 2011

Despite persistent economic uncertainty, tourist arrivals to Europe reached 503 million in 2011, accounting for 28 million of the 41 million additional international arrivals recorded worldwide. Central and Eastern Europe and Southern Mediterranean destinations (+8% each) experienced the best results. Although part of the growth in Southern Mediterranean Europe resulted from a shift in traffic away from the Middle East and North Africa, destinations in the Mediterranean also profited from improved outbound flows from markets such as Scandinavia,

Germany

and the

Russian Federation

Asia and the Pacific (+6%) was up 11 million arrivals in 2011, reaching a total 216 million international tourists. South Asia and South-East Asia (both +9%) benefited from strong intraregional demand, while growth was comparatively weaker in North-East Asia (+4%) and Oceania (+0.3%), partly due to the temporary decline in the Japanese outbound market.

The Americas (+4%) saw an increase of 6 million arrivals, reaching 156 million in total. South America, up by 10% for the second consecutive year, continued to lead growth. Central America and the Caribbean (both +4%) maintained the growth rates of 2010. North America, with a 3% increase, hit the 100 million tourists mark in 2011.

Africa maintained international arrivals at 50 million, as the gain of two million by Sub-Saharan destinations (+7%) was offset by the losses in North Africa (-12%). The Middle East (-8%) lost an estimated 5 million international tourist arrivals, totalling 55 million. Nevertheless, some destinations such as

Saudi Arabia

Oman

and the

United Arab Emirates

sustained steady growth.

Receipts confirm positive trend in arrivals

Available data on international tourism receipts and expenditure for 2011 closely follows the positive trend in arrivals.

Among the top ten tourist destinations, receipts were up significantly in the

USA

(+12%),

Spain

(+9%), Hong Kong (

China

) (+25%) and the

(+7%). The top spenders were led by emerging source markets – China (+38%), Russia (+21%), Brazil (+32%) and India (+32%) – followed by traditional markets, with the growth in expenditure of travelers from Germany (+4%) and the USA (+5%) above the levels of previous years.

International tourism on course to hit one billon in 2012

UNWTO forecasts international tourism to continue growing in 2012 although at a slower rate. Arrivals are expected to increase by 3% to 4%, reaching the historic one billion mark by the end of the year. Emerging economies will regain the lead with stronger growth in Asia and the Pacific and Africa (4% to 6%), followed by the

Americas

and Europe (2% to 4%). The Middle East (0% to +5%) is forecast to start to recover part of its losses from 2011.

These prospects are confirmed by the UNWTO Confidence Index. The 400 UNWTO Panel of Experts from around the globe, expects the tourism sector to perform positively in 2012, though somewhat weaker than last year.

Governments urged to facilitate travel

As destinations worldwide look to stimulate travel demand under pressing economic conditions, UNWTO is urging governments to consider advancing travel facilitation, an area in which in spite of the great strides made so far there is still much room for progress. UNWTO advises countries to make the most of information and communication technologies in improving visa application and processing formalities, as well as the timings of visa issuance, and to analyze the possible impact of travel facilitation in increasing their tourism economies.

“Travel facilitation is closely interlinked with tourism development and can be key in boosting demand. This area is of particular relevance in a moment in which governments are looking to stimulate economic growth but cannot make major use of fiscal incentives or public investment,” said Mr. Rifai.

Ever since Apple acquired virtual assistant technology Siri in early-2010, adding voice-activated travel search to mobiles has gained momentum as a concept.

And now with Siri included as part of the latest Apple iPhone, some applications are emerging, including a system developed by social travel booking startup Bonvoy.

In this clip, Bonvoy founder and CEO Mujteba Naqvi demonstrates how the system works, including integration into the existing Bonvoy search and booking system.

The idea mirrors in part the winning entry to THack London in February 2011, developed by SITA Lab, using voice recognition on a Android mobile device.

Chinese Astrology is a Balance Theory of Five Elements. Each animal can be converted into Five Elements. Dragon contains Earth, Water and Wood. BACKGROUND

Unlike many other industries, the tourism sector keeps on growing generating positive effects on both income and job creation. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) the tourism industry accounted for more than 9 per cent of world GDP in 2010. In addition, the United Nations World Tourism Organization estimates that international arrivals are expected to reach nearly 1.5 billion by the year 2020.
A number of major factors can explain this dramatic increase in demand for tourism: (1) the process of globalization; (2) the development of mass transportation and motorization (and the parallel decrease in cost of transportation due to improvements in technology); (3) the rhythm of increase of world GDP as well as the increase of income to be allocated to travels; (4) the introduction of new ICT applications in the work of public and private stakeholders in the tourism sector; (5) the general improvement of security and rights for tourists.
Every and each of the above mentioned factors is significantly contributing to shaping a different institutional landscape and economic environment for a number of economic players such as Convention Bureaus, Professional Conference Organizers, Destination Management Companies, Airlines, Hotels, Conference Venues, Congress Centers, Convention Centers, Exhibition Centers. Moreover, companies in the tourism sector are confronted with increasing managerial challenges and have to deal with a turbulent and fast changing environment.

RESEARCH IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM RELATED ISSUES

Scholars dealing with tourism are trying to gain a thorough, articulated and clear cut picture of the major changes going on in the tourism sector, with a specific emphasis on major changes such as (1) a shift to sustainable tourism and CSR in the tourism sector; (2) the adoption of ICT applications in tourism, with a focus on social media; (3) a structural change in the style of consumption and fruition of tourist products and services according to a post-Fordist model of consumption; (4) the impact of several major economic, political and climatic events (such as the recent financial and economic downturn, the terrorist attacks and the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano) on the travelling and hospitality industry.
All of these issues (and more) require significant reflection and this conference will be an irreplaceable opportunity to tackle them in depth.

We invite contributions that focus especially, but not exclusively, on tourism, travel, leisure and hospitality management, with an emphasis on:

The topics reported above are indicative and informative rather than exclusive. Other interesting work on tourism management and tourism related issues that is not closely related to the themes above will be taken into consideration.
We invite full papers, doctoral research papers, poster papers, abstracts, and research proposals on any of the aforementioned topics without any specific constraints in terms of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches.
To advance investigation on tourism management and to further expand its theoretical and practical bases and boundaries, we need to explore, apply and confront both conceptual and empirical wisdom and scholarship stemming from different perspectives. Therefore, both business practitioners and academics are invited to submit their contributions.

Last but not least, a further collection of papers is under consideration for publication in a volume with a relevant international publishing house.

This chapter proposed two conceptual models which explored the impact of the Internet on travel satisfaction and overall life satisfaction. The first model (Fig. 19.4 ) focused on the Internet role when it was considered as a tool for travel planning at a pretrip stage, and the second model (Fig. 19.5 ) focused on the Internet role when it was considered as a social platform on a Web 2.0 environment where people shared travel information after a trip, communicated, and socialized

with others. This chapter found two signifi cant roles of the Internet in satisfaction formation and satisfaction modifi cation (Fig. 19.6 ). In terms of satisfaction formation, the greater amount of transparent and reliable information collected through the Internet at the pretrip stage helps individuals adjust expectations to be realistic, and the realistic expectation leads to reduce the negative satisfaction disconfirmation and maintain a higher level of satisfaction. In terms of satisfaction modification, postconsumption experiences at the social platform reconstruct previous memories and accordingly modify satisfaction. The modifi ed satisfaction eventually infl uences overall life satisfaction.

This chapter contributes to the QOL research because it suggests the alternative independent variables of travel satisfaction and overall life satisfaction, which are in fi ve need constructs and can be measured through survey research methods. Future studies should be conducted to test the two proposed models. The proposed models in this chapter focus on pretrip behavior and posttrip behavior. However, the Internet with mobile technology and location-based technology is increasingly
playing a signifi cant role in travel satisfaction at the during-trip stage. Future study should be conducted to explore the Internet role at this stage and its impacts on travel satisfaction and overall life satisfaction.

Puppet playing can only happen thanks to highly sophisticated bouncing light technology

On screen two animated "puppets" are wriggling around.

As the big blue hippo and thin red worm dance from side to side, on the bottom right of the screen their movements match shapes cast by images of two fluorescent green hands.

These in turn mirror actions being taken by SoftKinetic's demonstrator which is gesticulating wildly just 15cm in front of the firm's new DepthSense camera.

Gesture-controlled interfaces are nothing new. Microsoft's Kinect sensor became the world's fastest selling consumer electronics device when it was launched for the Xbox console in late 2010 - and this year's Consumer Electronics Show is jam packed with companies putting it to alternative uses.

However, what makes SoftKinetic's device stand out is the fact that the user can be close to the sensor - making it suitable as a control mechanism for laptops and tablets.

"The technology is very different from what Microsoft is using," the Belgian firm's chief executive Michael Tombroff tells the BBC.

"We use something called Time-of-Flight which is our own patented technology which is more suited for close interactions."

3D displays

The system works by projecting light into space which then bounces back to the camera. The sensor calculates the light's "time of flight" to work out the how far away the various parts of the users' body are.

"We can adjust the illumination according to the distance," Mr Tombroff explains.

"The further you want to see objects the more illumination you need because they are far away, the closer they are the lower the illumination. Time of flight is very good for both ends of the spectrum."

The firm's ultimate ambition is to shrink its camera so that it is small enough to fit into ultrabooks and smartphones, and license out the technology to manufacturers.

Beyond hand puppet animations and gaming it suggests more serious applications such as computer aided design and the control of 3D displays.

"You will see objects coming out of the screen... and you will be able to grab and play with them," said Mr Tombroff.

At the start of the Las Vegas trade show, the organiser - the US's Consumer Electronics Association - predicted that this would be "the year of the interface".

It said the companies would aim to make operating devices a "seamless, natural experience" in which the technology involved would "move into the background."

The proliferation of gesture-controlled devices on show has borne that out. Examples include booths in which shoppers can spin around avatars of themselves wearing virtual clothes and robots whose movements are controlled with a wave of the hand.

New uses of voice recognition have been the other major development, albeit with mixed results.

Windows Phone's senior product manager, Derek Snyder, had a nasty moment when his demo of the operating system's speech recognition facility briefly went awry in front of an audience of thousands at the firm's keynote presentation.

Show-and-tells of Samsung's new voice controlled television set also proved glitchy at times, with misunderstood commands and the system refusing to acknowledge instructions if unapproved words were added to requests.

These issues are likely to be worked out as natural speech recognition software advances.

However, some firms have believe it is wise to resist the technology at present.

Keeping it simple

Daimler's Mercedes Benz USA division has opted for a flywheel control for its new mbrace 2 dashboard system, unlike its rival Ford whose Sync system focuses on voice.

Mercedes' "command controller" can be spun around and moved up and down to act as a toggle or cursor for its display unit which provides access to internet services including Facebook, Google, Yelp and Associated Press news.

The new Mercedes SL-class will be the first model to be equipped with mbrace2 in April - with a wider roll-out happening next year

While the firm has used similar control mechanisms in the past, its key innovation is the interface it controls which strips down apps down to their basics.

The company put together its own app development team in Silicon Valley's Palo Alto last year. It coded and designed the apps, while keeping in close contact with original developers such as Facebook to ensure they approved of its efforts to make the apps safer to use while driving.

"If you want to post to your wall you can do that using a series of canned messages already plugged in there," explains Robert Policano, the firm's product manager of telematics services.

"The advantage of that is that you don't have to take your eyes off the road for more than a few seconds to access that.

"It will recognise where you are so you can use it to post your estimated time of arrival, where your ultimate destination is, or a [pre-programmed] cheeky message such as 'I'm stuck in darned traffic again.'"

More elaborate messages can be written from scratch, but the system will refuse to accept them unless it detects the car has been parked, to protect the motorist and other road users.

The firm's Google app also offers panoramic images provided by the search firm and other users to help motorists work out where to go. Pre-programmed menu commands can also hunt out nearby petrol stations or points of interest via the internet.

"But the world has changed - people want to bring their digital lives into their cars, they have this craving for information whether it's the weather, the latest stocks, current traffic conditions or who is talking about them on their [Facebook] walls. So with that realisation we said how can we do this in the smartest way possible."

Eye controls

An even smarter alternative may be just around the corner.

Swedish firm Tobii is attending CES for the first time to promote its Eye Tracking technology.

Its sensors measure the position and movement of the users' eyes hundreds of times every second allowing desktop PCs and laptops equipped with its sensors to be controlled by gaze.

Using the equipment feels like the computer has learned how to read your mind.

Pages of text starts to scroll upwards as you reach the bottom part of the screen.

A game of Asteroids can be controlled by flicking your eyes towards each space rock activating laser blasts to prevent the objects from reaching earth.

And objects can be selected from a page full of images by staring at the relevant photograph until it is replicated at the top of the screen - glancing at this copy then expands the picture to fill the whole screen.

"We know exactly where you are looking all the time," says the firm's founder and chief technology officer John Elvesjo.

"So you can have interfaces that adapt to your gazepoint. The simplest example is a screen that turns on when you are looking at it and is off when you are not looking at it.

"Or let's say in a car with a heads up display I can minimise the readouts in size and light intensity until you look at them - and then they grow bigger and brighter."

Leaving the 'stone age'

Tobii's technology is already used to help disabled people control computers, but its packages currently retail for around $6,000 (£3,910).

It says costs and sensor sizes must be reduced if the technology is to enter the consumer market, but adds that virtually every games console and PC maker has bought and trialled its technology. China's Lenovo has already produced a concept laptop with the technology built in and Tobii predicts Eyetrack could go mainstream in as little as two years.

It is attending CES to encourage software developers to start work on related apps.

"You have PlayStation's Motion and Xbox's Kinect when you are at a distance, you have touch when you are really up close, but on that middle distance where we are working all the time with our computers, you have nothing," says Mr Elvesjo.

"And you have like a stone age keyboard with a kind of stone age mouse - so it's up for innovation."

Whether Eye Tracking, Time-of-Flight based gestures, voice or some other technology fills that space is still up for grabs.

2012 may not yet be the year of the paradigm changing, glitch-free new interface for the masses - but the future feels tantalisingly close.

This article assesses the diffusion of innovation theory and the technology acceptance model, and explores the factors influencing the decision to engage in technology adoption in small owner-managed travel firms. This is done through the use of the overarching theory of organisational decision-making to identify concepts and constructs which relate to the decision to adopt. The work aims to identify the genesis of adoption decisions in particular where owners are themselves the managers and provide leadership for the organization. After the distillation of factors it was found that due to simple hierarchical structures and decision-making processes which were further exacerbated by immediate self interest, leadership was the most significant driver. This article goes further to identify leadership typologies at each level of technology adoption in firms.

The convergence of leadership and technology adoption in itself is not new however the identification of distinctive characteristics of leaders who stimulate each new level of adoption along an adoption hierarchy in firms is one step closer to understanding the determinants of technology adoption. This was previously lacking particularly for small, owner-managed travel firms. The final product which has emerged is new in concept and in context. Conceptually this is the first study to design a model that creates and illustrates new leadership typologies at each level of technology adoption along an adoption hierarchy. This type of study is new to mainstream research and even more so to the tourism context. The emphasis on travel agencies has now opened up avenues for similar research on small tourism supply firms such as small owner-managed hotels. This kind of research is also completely new in the Caribbean and will no doubt influence a wave of e-tourism research in the region. In the final analysis this study has developed an applicable set of classifications which consider more technologically related variables to be advanced from a leadership perspective in order to understand why some firms are at higher levels than others. It must be noted that this model is transferable only to the extent that firms are small, owner-managed and operate in a common context as it relates to the digital divide and culture. This means that comparative research across cultures or societies may require different conceptualizations.

The management implication and recommendation is that small travel firms, which are not engaging in multiple platform distribution, should assess whether this decision is one that is driven by solid market research or the intuition and preferences of leaders, which have been shaped by their own personal experiences. This will require independent assessment which goes outside of the unilateral decision-making approach. The firms without a formalized board of directors should seek to institute boards in an effort to ensure that decision-making is sound and driven by singular personalities. This may or may not lead to increased technology adoption, but it will provide more logical and rational decision processes which are needs-based.

The aim is to provide a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue to ensure the development of strong and sustainable national Travel & Tourism industries capable of contributing effectively to international economic development. The theme of this edition of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report, “Beyond the Downturn,” reflects the cautiously optimistic outlook and many complexities still facing the industry that must be overcome to ensure strong sectoral growth going into the future.
